Moong Dal (Split Green Gram – Lentils)

 
Gather all ingredients together first:  2 minutes

Pre-cut all vegetables:  3 minutes

Cooking time:  15 minutes

 
Ingredients:
 

Onion 2
Moong dal 100 g
Asafoetida Sprinkle a bit
Tomato 1
Green chillies 1 or 2
Oil 2 tbsp
Ginger and garlic paste ¼ tsp
Garam masala powder ¼ tsp
Black pepper powder ¼ tsp
Red chillies powder ¼ tsp
Turmeric powder ¼ tsp
Cumin Seeds ½ tsp
Fresh coriander Leaves 5-10 g
Salt to taste

 
Recipe:
  • Boil moong dal in a frying pan for 7-8 minutes till it softens (can also cook in pressure cooker/micro-oven for 5-6 minutes).
  • Finely chop onions, green chillies, and slice tomato.
  • Heat the frying pan and add 2 tbsp of oil.
  • Add cumin seeds and once it begins to sizzle add onions and fry until golden brown.
  • Add ginger and garlic paste and stir it for a few seconds.
  • Add red chillies powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, garam masala and black pepper powder.
  • Stir it for a minute.
  • Add in tomato slices, sprinkle salt to taste and fry it again till it’s like thick gravy.
  • Sprinkle a bit of asafoetida on the gravy and stir it.
  • Add blended moong dal and cook it for 2-4 minutes. Stir it.
  • Serve with rice/roti/naan Bread (Indian bread).
